About the Artist
Rachel Favelle is an Australian Pop Surreal artist and illustrator. She creates her distinctive detailed portraits from her coastal home studio on the Gold Coast where she lives with her two children, husband and their schnauzer, Pepper. Graduating with a Bachelor of Illustration in 1997 and a degree in Secondary Art Education, Rachel has been an artist and visual arts teacher since 2000. In 2018 Rachel released her first children’s book titled, ‘The Bear Hug’ and is seeking to develop a series of picture books in the immediate future.
A finalist in the Rotary Arts Prize, Neumann Portrait Prize and the Inaugural Art Piece Prize, Rachel’s works are now exhibited internationally in the United States with Curly Tale Art Gallery and Portugal, Penumbra Gallery. Her works were also featured in 2018 as one of the top 40 artists in the Art Lovers Australia online gallery.
Her research into fairytales and classic children's literature became the focus for Rachel’s artworks during her Illustration degree and to this day has become the inspiration for much of her work. Rachel’s richly coloured and fanciful worlds, inhabited by quirky eyed characters, imbue the works with narrative and a contemplative stillness. Early works in painting were inspired by playful memories of childhood, antiquated objects and puns but as her work has developed it has become underpinned by explorations into relationships, both external and internal.
