Stranger Lands
These works are a celebration of Australia’s diverse flora and fauna, a pertinent subject in light of the 2019 bushfires. While I seek to capture a unique portrait of Australia, the lace that adorns the native animals in my work and invasive flora reflect a deeper metaphor about colonisation. Many Australians are a stranger to the lands we occupy. Unlike Aboriginal people whose ancestry is tied to the stories of the land, many do not have a strong connection to this place. There becomes a disparity between residing in a country and appreciating the unique natural qualities that this land possesses. This body of work, titled ‘Stranger Lands’, aims to reveal a history of human impact which has changed this place forever.
Out of the Velvet Blackness
Drawing inspiration from a blend of fairy tales and children’s classics, such as Antoine de Saint–Exupery’s, ‘The Little Prince’, ‘Out of the Velvet Blackness’, highlights the significance of childhood creativity and curiosity and the loss of that as we age. The series pays homage to the stories, the role-playing, and dreaming that begin in the dark recesses of our child-self’s imagination.
