Sweet Tooth is the reimagining of the classic Hansel and Gretel fairytale. Set within a shadowy forest, the work captures the moment Gretel, represented as a wide-eyed owl, discovers the infamous gingerbread house. The owl, a nocturnal creature of intuition and hidden knowledge, represents Gretel’s duality, curious yet cautious as she teeters on the edge between enchantment and danger. This work explores the themes of temptation, survival, and the boundaries between ‘trick’ and ‘treat’. In the context of Halloween, Gretel’s journey becomes a metaphor for the choices we make when confronted with the notion of it is ‘too good to be true?’ How much do we trust the glittering surface? How quickly do we reach for what we’re told is sweet?
