Acrylic on Cradled Birch Wood

30 × 30 × 2cm

Ready to Hang

The emperor, living in a grand palace, learns about the nightingale that lives in the forest nearby and sings beautiful, enchanting songs. He asks to hear it, and when he does, he is so moved that he commands the nightingale to live in the palace. However, the nightingale, which had always been free, feels trapped in the palace and is soon replaced by a mechanical bird made of gold and jewels, which can also sing but lacks the nightingale’s emotional depth.

The emperor grows fond of the mechanical bird, but when it breaks and he falls ill, he is reminded of the real nightingale. The nightingale, now free, returns and sings for the emperor, healing him. The nightingale's song brings true joy and comfort, teaching the emperor that true beauty and wisdom come from nature, not artifice.

The story explores themes of materialism versus nature, the value of genuine beauty, and the importance of freedom.
